MALAWI: ECAMA Slams Government Tax Policies, Urges Support for Youth Entrepreneurs
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) has criticized the government’s taxation policies, describing them as unfavorable and a major setback for young entrepreneurs.
This criticism comes in response to a recent statement by Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda, who reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a conducive economic environment for the youth.
Speaking in an interview with African Culture TV, ECAMA President Bertha Bangara Chikadza argued that current economic policies, including the tax regime, tend to favor established businesses rather than supporting young people who are eager to start their own ventures.
Chikadza highlighted that high taxes and complicated regulatory frameworks discourage young Malawians from entering the business sector, limiting job creation and innovation.
She further urged the government to review and revise certain economic measures to make them more inclusive and youth-friendly, emphasizing that empowering young entrepreneurs is key to reducing unemployment and stimulating economic growth.
ECAMA’s call echoes growing concerns among youth organizations and business experts who argue that without deliberate support, Malawi risks stifling the potential of its young population which makes up the majority of the country’s workforce.
Chikadza concluded by encouraging open dialogue between policymakers and youth representatives to craft strategies that genuinely address the challenges facing young entrepreneurs today.
