A Malawi Airlines flight, MWI020, scheduled to fly from Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, to OR Tambo Airport in South Africa with a stopover at Chileka International Airport in Blantyre, was disrupted on Thursday morning due to Cyclone Jude.
According to Gift Matewere, Airport Manager at KIA, the flight was unable to land in Blantyre and instead departed directly for Johannesburg at 11:31 am.
The flight had been delayed by two hours and 30 minutes, having been originally scheduled to leave KIA at 9:00 am.
Samuel Kalua, Director of Civil Aviation, explained to Zodiak that the bad weather in Blantyre had reduced visibility, making it impossible for pilots to land safely.
As a result, flights have been suspended at Chileka Airport since yesterday due to the severe weather conditions caused by Cyclone Jude.
Cyclone Jude has brought devastating effects to the region, with reports indicating that over 11,000 people have been affected by the storm. The cyclone has caused widespread damage, including power outages, destroyed homes, and disrupted transportation.
The Malawi government has urged citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Relief efforts are underway to assist those affected by the cyclone.
