MALAWI: Contractors To Seize Kalinyeke and Chingeni Toll Gates Over Unpaid K15 Billion
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Contractors under the Malawi Building, Civil Engineering, and Allied Trade Association (MABCATA) have announced plans to take over the Kalinyeke toll gate in Dedza and the Chingeni toll gate in Ntcheu starting on the 24th September.
This action is part of their effort to recover more than K15 billion owed to them by the Roads Fund Administration (RFA).
According to a statement seen by reporters, the contractors have been engaging with RFA officials and other relevant government authorities in efforts to resolve the matter. However, despite several meetings and negotiations, no tangible progress has been made.
The contractors expressed frustration that RFA, which collects substantial revenue from these toll gates, is still unable to settle the debts. They claimed the lack of action has forced them to take this drastic step.
The contractors stated that as of the 24th, all vehicles passing through the Kalinyeke and Chingeni toll gates would be allowed free passage. They added that this measure would remain in place until RFA fully settles the outstanding payments.
They also noted that the prolonged delays in payment have negatively impacted their operations and projects, with some contractors even being at risk of bankruptcy.
In addition to taking over the toll gates, the contractors warned that they would explore other options to ensure the government addresses their grievances if RFA fails to comply with their demands.
The announcement has raised concerns among motorists and road users who frequently pass through these toll gates, as it could lead to disruptions and affect the smooth operation of the roads.
