The Comoros Football Federation has approached the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) with a request to host their Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against the Flames at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
According to Gomegzani Zakazaka, FAM’s competitions director, “We have responded to their inquiry and are awaiting a formal request. However, we are aware that Comoros is also exploring other options.”
Malawi is scheduled to play away against Comoros between February 28 and March 2, with the return leg taking place a week later. If an agreement is reached, both matches could potentially be played in Malawi.
The Comoros Football Federation is facing challenges in finding a certified venue that meets the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, with a capacity of 41,100, is one of the few stadiums in the region that meets these standards.
Hosting both matches in Malawi would not only benefit the Comoros team but also provide an opportunity for Malawian football fans to watch their team play at home. The Flames have a strong following in Malawi, and the matches are expected to attract large crowds.
FAM is expected to make a decision on the request soon, taking into account the logistical and financial implications of hosting both matches. If approved, the matches would be played at Bingu National Stadium, which has hosted several international football matches in the past.
