Chief Nyengere in Dowa, Malawi, has lamented the increasing cases of child marriages and early pregnancies in his area, which have reached alarming levels.
According to the Chief, four out of every 10 young girls between the ages of 12 and 18 become pregnant or are forced into marriage by their parents due to poverty and ignorance.
The chief expressed his concerns during a sensitization campaign organized by Golden Family community-based Organisation (GOFAO), a Dowa-based non-profit organization.
He noted that this problem contributes to high school dropout rates.
Yamikani Chikho, Executive Director of GOFAO, said that his organization has launched a four-year project targeting over 15 villages under Chief Nyengere.
The project aims to sensitize the community about the dangers of child marriages and early pregnancies.
Among other initiatives, GOFAO will introduce Village Savings and Loan programs, as well as livestock pass-on programs, targeting vulnerable families to improve their economic status.
