The campaign period for all political parties and candidates contesting in the September 16 elections officially ended on Saturday, marking the final day of rallies and public engagements across Malawi.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has confirmed that all campaign activities must cease at midnight in accordance with the electoral laws, which provide for a cooling-off period before polling.

MEC Chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale reminded parties and candidates to respect the rule. “We urge all contestants to abide by the electoral code of conduct. The remaining days are meant for voters to reflect on the messages they have heard and make informed choices,” he said.

Throughout the campaign period, major political parties, including the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Transformation Movement (UTM), and the United Democratic Front (UDF), held rallies across the country, each presenting their manifestos and urging Malawians to vote for change or continuity.

Observers have noted that this year’s campaign has been marked by high voter interest and spirited competition, with turnout at rallies reflecting a keen anticipation of the elections. Civil society organisations have since called on voters to maintain peace and unity during and after the polls.

“Malawi belongs to all of us, regardless of political affiliation. We must prove to the world that our democracy continues to grow through peaceful participation,” said Timothy Mtambo, one of the civic leaders monitoring the process.
The polls on Tuesday are expected to attract millions of Malawians eager to choose their next leaders.
