By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The President of Botswana, Duma Boko, has arrived in Malawi today, 5th July, ahead of the country’s 61st Independence Day celebrations scheduled for tomorrow, 6th July, in the capital city, Lilongwe.
Upon his arrival, President Boko is expected to proceed to Kamuzu Palace where he will hold bilateral talks with Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening ties between the two nations in areas such as trade, agriculture, tourism, and regional security.

President Boko’s visit highlights the strong diplomatic relationship that exists between Malawi and Botswana and symbolises the growing spirit of unity and cooperation among Southern African nations. His participation in the Independence Day festivities is also seen as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Malawi.
This year’s celebrations mark 61 years since Malawi attained self-rule from British colonial rule in 1964. Various activities, including military parades, cultural performances, and interfaith prayers, are expected to take place at Bingu National Stadium and other venues across the country.
Speaking ahead of the event, government officials emphasised that this year’s theme centres on promoting national unity, peace, and economic resilience. Citizens have been encouraged to participate in the festivities and reflect on the country’s journey and achievements over the decades.
Several other foreign dignitaries are also expected to attend the celebrations, underscoring Malawi’s growing role in fostering regional partnerships and international relations.
