Malawi Blood Transfusion Service Faces Challenges In Meeting Annual Blood Collection Target
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) has collected 82% of its annual blood collection target by November 2024, a 12% drop from the same period last year.
According to MBTS Marketing and Public Relations Manager Janet Katonda, the drop is due to financial hiccups among other challenges.
Katonda explained that the financial constraints have affected the organization’s ability to collect blood from various parts of the country.
She also mentioned that the lack of resources has limited the organization’s outreach programs, making it difficult to reach potential blood donors.
Another challenge facing the MBTS is the issue of corruption in the distribution of blood in public hospitals.
Katonda expressed concern that some individuals are selling blood, which is supposed to be distributed free of charge in public health institutions.
She urged Malawians to report any cases of corruption spotted in the blood distribution process.
The MBTS has been working tirelessly to promote blood donation and ensure that blood is available to those in need.
However, the organization relies heavily on donations and support from the public to continue its work.
Katonda appealed to Malawians to come forward and donate blood to help the organization meet its target and save lives.
In addition, Katonda emphasized the importance of reporting any cases of corruption in the blood distribution process.
She assured the public that all reports would be treated with confidentiality and that action would be taken against those found guilty of corruption.
The MBTS is committed to providing safe and quality blood to patients in need.
The organisation is working closely with the government and other stakeholders to address the challenges facing the blood transfusion service in Malawi.
