Head of the Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) in the Eastern Region, Edith Chimphamba has assured the public of the organization’s commitment to providing adequate blood and blood products in all authorized hospitals.
This assurance comes after the MBTS Eastern Region Centre achieved a remarkable 101% blood collection target in the just-ended financial year .
The MBTS collected 17,489 units of blood, exceeding its target of 17,334 units, from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Chimphamba attributed this success to the concerted efforts of various stakeholders, despite facing financial challenges that hindered some planned blood donation activities.
Chimphamba emphasized that the MBTS is committed to ensuring that blood shortages become a thing of the past. The MBTS Balaka Centre, which covers four districts in the Eastern Region and part of Dedza, has consistently exceeded its annual targets since 2021. This achievement reflects the growing awareness of the importance of regular blood donation .
The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of blood transfusions in the country. Established in 2004, the MBTS is responsible for providing adequate safe blood supplies .
