Flames captain John CJ Banda is contemplating retirement from international football after the 2025 African Cup of Nations. The experienced midfielder, who has been a consistent figure in Malawi’s National Team since 2011, made the announcement on Wednesday during a pre-match press conference.
Banda, a former Blue Eagles star, expressed his desire to step aside and allow younger players to take over after the 2025 tournament. “It’s time to give the young lads an opportunity,” Banda remarked.
His intention to retire comes as the National Team prepares for a generational shift.
The 31-year-old midfielder made his debut in the Cecafa Cup at Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, showcasing his talent and earning respect from fans and teammates alike. Over the years, Banda has been a symbol of reliability, wearing the national colors under multiple coaching regimes.
Coach Patrick Mabedi has often praised Banda’s discipline and leadership, stating that he is an exemplary figure for younger players. “John is a role model on and off the field,” Mabedi said. “His dedication and work ethic have been unmatched.”
In the decade since his debut, Banda has been called upon for national duty without fail, serving under various coaches. His strong work ethic, leadership, and humility have made him a pillar of the Flames.
As Banda reflects on his career, his decision is rooted in a desire to pave the way for the next generation of footballers. He emphasized the importance of giving the youth an opportunity to grow and develop into future stars.
Though his departure will leave a gap in the team, Banda’s contributions to Malawian football are undeniable. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the game.
Fans and football lovers across the country will be watching closely as the captain bids farewell to the international stage, hoping for a memorable performance at the 2025 AFCON before he hangs up his boots.
