By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of the Blantyre Archdiocese of the Catholic Church has called for transparency in government, citing the recent plane crash in Chikangawa that claimed the lives of nine people.
Speaking during a Christmas Eve Mass at the Limbe Cathedral, Archbishop Msusa expressed concern over the lack of clear information regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash. “We are struggling to get clear information about what happened to the people who died in the plane crash. We need transparency in such matters,” he said.
Archbishop Msusa offered prayers for the families of all those who lost their lives in the crash, including an aide to Vice President Saulos Chilima, who was a Catholic.
Archbishop Msusa’s call for transparency comes at a time when the government is facing criticism for its handling of the plane crash. The government has been accused of being slow to release information about the crash, leading to speculation and rumors.
The plane crashed on June 10, 2024, in Chikangawa, killing all nine people on board. Two inquiries have been conducted into the crash, but the cause remains unclear.
The Archbishop’s comments were made during a special Christmas Eve Mass, which was attended by hundreds of worshippers. In his sermon, Archbishop Msusa emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in government, saying that these values are essential for building trust and promoting good governance.
