MALAWI: Airtel Africa Partners SpaceX to Launch Satellite-To-Mobile Service Across 14 Markets
By Smile Hamilton Malawi
Airtel Africa, in partnership with SpaceX, has announced the launch of the first satellite-to-mobile service across its 14 African markets, targeting approximately 174 million customers.
The service, known as Starlink Direct-to-Cell, will enable Airtel Africa customers with compatible smartphones to access network connectivity via satellite in areas without terrestrial coverage.
Airtel Africa Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sunil Taldar said the rollout is expected to begin in 2026. “The service will initially support data for selected applications and text messaging, before expanding to next-generation satellites capable of providing higher-speed connectivity directly to smartphones,” Taldar said.
He added that the partnership is designed to close connectivity gaps in hard-to-reach areas and complement existing terrestrial networks.
Starlink Vice President of Sales Stephanie Bednarek said the initiative will help bridge the digital divide. “This service will allow people in remote and underserved areas to stay connected where traditional networks cannot reach,” Bednarek said.
