Malawi Aims For 50% Women Representation In Parliament

Malawi is gearing up for a significant leap in women’s participation in politics and governance. The country has set ambitious strategic goals, including increasing women’s involvement in politics, promoting inclusive development, and empowering women through skills, governance, and economic opportunities.

Additionally, the goals focus on reducing gender-based violence and ensuring access to services for survivors.

UN Women Malawi Country Representative, Letty Chiwara, is optimistic about achieving 50% women representation in parliament in the upcoming elections, a significant jump from the current 23%.

This move aligns with the government’s recognition of women’s political empowerment as a crucial factor in achieving sustainable national development.

To ensure the success of these initiatives, Minister of Gender, Jean Sendeza, emphasised the importance of taking the strategic plan to communities, making it a living document rather than just a policy.

This approach will help create a more inclusive and equitable society.
