Human rights activists have demanded that the Malawi Police Service swiftly arrest the panga-wielding thugs who attacked and manhandled demonstrators in Lilongwe on Thursday.

Chairperson for the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), Gift Trapence, and National Advocacy Platform (NAP) Chairperson, Benedicto Kondowe, made the call on Friday in Lilongwe after visiting activist Sylvester Namiwa at his residence following the brutal attack, which occurred in full view of police officers and Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers.
Trapence emphasized that the law must take its course against the perpetrators who left Namiwa with deep cuts on his back and head. He described the attack as a serious threat to the country’s democratic values.
Kondowe, who also serves as Chairperson of the Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF), demanded speedy investigations to ensure justice is served on those responsible for orchestrating such barbaric acts.
Meanwhile, Namiwa says he is still in severe pain and expressed shock and disappointment at the failure of the police and MDF to protect him from the armed attackers.
