Thousands of Kenyans made their way to Homa Bay County on Sunday, June 1, 2025, for the 62nd Madaraka Day commemoration, marking the first time the event was hosted in the lakeside region since independence.
The celebrations took place at the newly revamped Raila Odinga Stadium, which saw a full house as citizens came together for the significant occasion.
This year’s national theme, “Harnessing Kenya’s Blue Economy for National Prosperity,” was central to the day’s program. In alignment with this focus, Homa Bay witnessed several transformative projects in the lead up to the holiday, including enhancements to the local pier and new developments along the lakefront, all aimed at boosting tourism and economic activity.
The event was presided over by President William Ruto, accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and Slovenia’s President Nataša Pirc Musar, who served as the Chief Guest.
The gathering also attracted both national and international dignitaries.
In his address, President Ruto reflected on the importance of Madaraka Day as a reaffirmation of Kenya’s pursuit of freedom, respect, security, and opportunity.
He called upon Kenyans to channel their collective creativity and resilience toward building a prosperous future that honors the struggles of the country’s independence heroes.
“Madaraka reminds us of the enduring spirit that led us to self-rule, and the promise that we must continue to deliver of a just, secure, and equitable society,” Ruto stated.
He further emphasized the need for innovation and hard work across all sectors, from agriculture to entrepreneurship, to fully realize the nation’s potential.
President Pirc Musar commended Kenya for its dedication to regional cooperation and praised the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a transformative platform for Africa’s shared economic advancement.
She encouraged unity and collaboration among African nations as the pathway to long-term stability and prosperity.
The celebrations included a striking aerial performance by the Kenya Airforce and a grand parade by military personnel. The newly upgraded stadium was filled with patriotic displays, cultural performances, and an enthusiastic public turnout, showcasing the pride and diversity of Kenya.
The success of the event also placed Homa Bay firmly on the national map, signaling its rising importance in Kenya’s development journey.
