A Kenyan officer deployed in the United Nations-backed security mission in Haiti sustained injuries on Tuesday during an operation in Kenscoff, located southeast of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was injured in the Belot area and later taken to Aspen Hospital for treatment.
According to the mission’s spokesperson, Jack Ombaka, the officer is in stable condition.
This incident comes weeks after another Kenyan officer lost his life during an operation in the Segur-Savien region on February 23.
The officer, Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, was shot and killed by gang members, becoming the first Kenyan casualty in the mission. His remains were repatriated last week.
Kenya has deployed approximately 800 officers as part of the multinational force working alongside Haiti’s national police to combat gang violence.
The mission also includes personnel from Jamaica, Guatemala, and El Salvador.
According to the United Nations, Haiti has seen a surge in violence, with over 5,600 people killed in gang-related incidents last year alone an increase of 1,000 deaths compared to the previous year.
