Kenyan Members Of County Assembly Oppose Speaker’s Impeachment, Accuse Governor Wavinya Of Political Motives

By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
A group of Machakos County Assembly Members (MCAs), has come out strongly against an attempt to remove Speaker Ann Kiusya from office, dismissing it as a politically motivated effort driven by Governor Wavinya Ndeti and her allies.
On Wednesday, about 23 MCAs, mainly from the opposition, convened in Nairobi to denounce the impeachment attempt, insisting that it lacks both the necessary support and justifiable grounds.
Speaking for the group, Kinanie MCA Francis Kavyu refuted claims that the motion has enough backing to pass, daring its sponsors to table it in the assembly.
“They claim to have enough votes, but let them bring it to the floor. They will be defeated,” Kavyu stated, emphasizing that for the impeachment to go through, it must meet both legal requirements and a majority vote threshold.
Mua MCA Francis Ngunga accused the county leadership of misusing public funds by prioritizing political battles over essential services.
He alleged that some MCAs had been offered Ksh.1 million each to back the impeachment motion.
“With hospitals facing shortages of critical supplies, it’s unacceptable that resources are being wasted on political schemes,” Ngunga remarked.
Kalama MCA Boniface Maeke also condemned the push to unseat the Speaker, saying, “We refuse to betray our people for political favors.”
The dispute has even drawn the attention of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who recently advised against the removal of the Speaker.
Meanwhile, Muthwani MCA Dominic Maithya, a vocal critic of the governor, hinted at the possibility of initiating a counter-move against Wavinya herself, questioning her leadership priorities.
The legal battle over the matter is now set to unfold in court, as the Machakos High Court has issued an order temporarily stopping the impeachment proceedings.
The case will be mentioned on April 30, leaving the county’s political future uncertain.
