Kenyan Family Seeks Justice Following Widow’s Attack At Husband’s Funeral

By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
A family in Narok is calling for justice, after a widow was physically assaulted during her husband’s burial in Kisii County.
A widely circulated video captures the moment when Mellen Mogaka was attacked by three men, for allegedly refusing to participate in a traditional burial rite by throwing soil into the grave.
Reports indicate that her in-laws were unhappy with her decision to leave her matrimonial home.
The distressing footage, which has sparked public outrage, shows Mellen crying for help as she endures the assault.
Recounting the ordeal, she revealed that she and her parents were also targeted, suffering humiliation and injuries.
Mellen’s father, Nehemiah Matundura, and her mother, Jelia Kerubo, described the incident as deeply degrading, with her attackers allegedly forcing her to swallow soil from the grave.
They questioned the justification of such actions in the name of culture.
While many have condemned the attack, some Gusii elders defended it, claiming that Mellen had disrespected long-standing traditions.
However, legal experts argue that cultural practices cannot override laws that protect individuals from violence.
Following investigations, authorities have arrested three suspects Lameck Osoro, Robert Sarudi, and Bismark Saudi who are expected to face charges in court.
Kenyan law criminalizes unlawful assault, and rights groups have called for justice to be served in this case.
