KENYA: Young Environmentalist Truphena Muthoni Honoured For Climate Advocacy
By Moses Punyuah, Nairobi Kenya.
President William Ruto has conferred the Head of State Commendation (HSC) on young environmentalist Truphena Muthoni in recognition of her record-breaking 72-hour tree-hugging feat that drew national and global attention to environmental conservation and climate change.
Muthoni received the honour at State House, where she also planted a tree alongside President Ruto and Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki. The President praised her act as “deeply symbolic and inspiring,” saying it reflects Kenya’s spirit of courage, determination, and environmental stewardship.

The Nyeri-based activist said her campaign was aimed at promoting the protection of indigenous trees while highlighting the link between environmental conservation and mental well-being. “Before we plant a million trees, we must also heal a million hurting hearts,” Muthoni said, noting that caring for nature is central to restoring both ecosystems and human wellness.
