KENYA: Wetang’ula Defends New Cybercrimes Law Amid Free Speech Concerns
By Lapit Moses Punyuah, Nairobi, Kenya
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, has defended the newly enacted Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act 2025, dismissing fears that it will stifle free expression.

Speaking at St. Teresa’s Isanjiro Catholic Church in Malava, Kakamega County, Wetang’ula said the law is designed to protect families and children from online dangers rather than silence dissent.
“The Act is not meant to gag anyone but to protect our families and children from online harm, from violent extremism and cultism to the scourge of pornography that threatens the sanctity of the family unit,” he said.
The Speaker’s remarks come days after President William Ruto assented to the Bill at State House, Nairobi, on October 15, sparking a heated national debate. Critics, including digital rights advocates, argue the amendments could open doors to state censorship, while supporters view them as a necessary modernisation of Kenya’s cyber laws.
The amended law builds on the 2018 Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, strengthening measures against hacking, identity theft, and digital exploitation as Kenya navigates a fast-evolving digital space.
