KENYA: Two Cryptocurrency Fraudsters Arrested In Kenya For Scamming Chinese National Ksh.6.5 Million

By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Detectives in Nairobi have apprehended two individuals accused of defrauding a Chinese businessman of Ksh.6.5 million in a cryptocurrency scam at Rose Gardens, Kileleshwa.
The suspects, Benson Macharia and Robinson Okwemo Nyandoro, allegedly posed as cryptocurrency traders and convinced the victim they could facilitate a large-scale exchange.
On February 20, 2025, while the transaction was in progress, Nyandoro reportedly took off with the money in a bag, leaving his accomplice to reassure the victim that the process was still ongoing.
Unaware he had been conned, the businessman waited for hours before realizing something was wrong.
He then reported the incident to Kileleshwa Police Station, prompting detectives to launch an investigation.
Macharia was the first to be arrested and was later arraigned at Kibera Magistrate’s Court, where he denied the charges and was released on a Ksh.1 million bond with a similar surety.
Nyandoro was tracked down two days later at The Hub Karen mall, where authorities also recovered Ksh.500,000 believed to be part of the stolen funds.
Following his arrest, he was taken to his residence in KMA Estate, Lang’ata, for further investigations.
Nyandoro was arraigned in court on Friday and also pleaded not guilty. He is currently being held at Industrial Area Prison as he awaits a bond ruling set for March 4, 2025.
