KENYA: Rising Road Tragedies As Two Killed In Mai Mahiu ENA Coach Bus Crash
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Kenya is reeling from yet another deadly road accident after two people: a woman and a child died when an ENA Coach bus was struck from behind by a trailer in Mai Mahiu on Saturday night.
The crash, which happened around 11 p.m., occurred as the bus, travelling from Nairobi to Migori with 47 passengers and three crew members, navigated the steep Mai Mahiu climb.
Police say the trailer’s brakes failed, causing it to slam into the bus and several private vehicles before the bus overturned.
Most injured passengers were treated and discharged from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital as investigations continue.
Photos from the scene show the overturned bus and crushed personal vehicles scattered along the road.
This latest tragedy comes amid a worrying rise in fatal crashes across the country.
Just last Friday, 25 people were killed in Kisumu County when a school bus carrying mourners veered off the road and overturned.
A day earlier, nine others lost their lives in Naivasha after a Kenya Pipeline Company bus collided with a cargo train at Morendat Junction.
Last week also saw other fatal incidents, including crashes in various parts of the country, adding to a deadly streak that has left dozens dead in just the first days of August.
With the frequency of accidents increasing, road safety concerns have intensified, prompting calls for urgent action from authorities and transport agencies to curb the rising death toll.
