KENYA: Public Outcry As Security Barricades Paralyse Movement During Saba Saba
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Kenyans are expressing growing frustration after hundreds were denied access to Nairobi early Monday, despite assurances from Deputy Inspector General Masengeli that no one would be blocked.
Masengeli had urged citizens to maintain peace and follow the law during the Saba Saba demonstrations, saying no Kenyan would be turned away.
Contrary to that statement, roads leading into the city were sealed off from as early as 4 a.m., with many motorists forced to turn around or wait for hours at security checkpoints.
Those heading to work were left stranded, while others had no choice but to walk long distances due to a breakdown in public transport services.
The situation has drawn sharp criticism toward the government, with many questioning its commitment to upholding constitutional rights.
Thousands of workers were unable to report to duty, despite a directive from Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku requiring all government employees to be at their stations.
The widespread disruption has intensified debate over the state’s handling of protests and respect for the rule of law, as frustrations continue to mount among affected citizens.
