Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has stated that the Kenya Kwanza government is steering the nation toward fulfilling the aspirations of its independence era leaders by focusing on projects that serve long-term national goals rather than short-term political gains.
Speaking on Saturday in Nyeri County, Kindiki highlighted the government’s Affordable Housing Programme as a key initiative aimed at eliminating informal settlements and promoting planned urban development.
He emphasized that this effort is intended to create a society where economic class differences are reduced, reflecting the vision held by Kenya’s founding leaders.
“The path we’re following is similar to what some Southeast Asian nations embarked on six decades ago. Though delayed, our efforts now are timely and necessary,” Kindiki said.
He underscored the importance of making strategic decisions that, while possibly unpopular in the moment, will ultimately uplift the lives of ordinary Kenyans.
According to the Deputy President, ensuring access to decent housing will play a significant role in reducing poverty and improving the country’s standing on global
development indicators.
“These are the hard but crucial decisions that this generation must make. Providing more Kenyans with dignified housing will reverse the hardships brought by poverty,” he said.
Kindiki’s comments come just days after President William Ruto inaugurated more than 1,000 housing units in Nairobi’s Mukuru area, part of the ongoing national affordable housing rollout.
The initiative is funded through a housing levy, requiring workers to contribute 1.5 percent of their base salary, with employers matching the amount.
Despite facing resistance from various quarters, the programme remains a top priority for the administration.
