Kenyan President William Ruto, has expressed his condolences following the death of Janet Wanja, a legendary figure in Kenyan volleyball and member of the Malkia Strikers.
Wanja passed away after battling gallbladder cancer and receiving palliative care.
In his tribute, President Ruto celebrated Wanja’s remarkable contributions to sports in Kenya, praising her as a talented and disciplined athlete.
He remarked: “Janet Wanja, a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, served the cause of our country’s sports with honour and dedication.
“She was focused, hardworking, and a team player. May it be comfort to her family, friends, and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time.
“One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja.”
Wanja, aged 40, was a revered setter who had a stellar career spanning over 20 years.
Her brother, Kevin Kimani, who plays football for Mathare United, confirmed her demise on Thursday night through a heartfelt social media post.
“The family of Janet Wanja would like to announce her passing on after a brave battle with gallbladder cancer.
“Our sincere and deepest gratitude goes out to Kenya Pipeline Company for walking the journey with us from the beginning and tirelessly providing all she needed in terms of medical support,” Kimani said.
He also extended thanks to the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for their unwavering support.
Wanja was diagnosed shortly after her return from the Paris Olympics, where she had served as a trainer for the Malkia Strikers.
After the diagnosis, she stayed out of the public eye, and her condition was made public earlier this month by her family.
KVF President Charles Nyaberi conveyed the volleyball community’s sorrow, describing Wanja as a pivotal figure in the sport.
“The Kenya Volleyball Federation is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved star, iconic veteran setter Janet Wanja Mungai, after a courageous battle with gallbladder cancer,” he said.
Nyaberi highlighted her journey, starting as a standout player at Mukumu Girls High School, advancing to Kenya Commercial Bank , and later excelling at Kenya Pipeline.
Representing the Malkia Strikers, she competed on global and continental stages, cementing her legacy as one of Kenya’s finest volleyball players.
Her role as the Malkia Strikers’ trainer saw her guide the team to prestigious tournaments such as the Paris Olympics and the World Challenger Cup in the Philippines.
The volleyball federation also appreciated Kenya Pipeline Company for consistently supporting Wanja’s medical care and extended gratitude to the sports community for their encouragement during her illness.
As Kenyans reflect on Wanja’s extraordinary career and enduring legacy, her commitment, resilience, and passion continue to inspire aspiring athletes. May her soul rest in peace.
