President William Ruto has reached out to Meshack Ojwang’, the father of the late Albert Ojwang’, offering words of comfort and a donation of Sh2 million to help the family cope with their tragic loss.
Albert, who was the only child of Mzee Ojwang’, died under unclear circumstances while in police custody.
He had been taken from his home in Homa Bay and later died in Nairobi following his arrest on June 7.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga shared the news of the President’s support during a condolence visit to the Ojwang’ family home. She stated that President Ruto had personally called the grieving father and his wife, expressing his sorrow and empathy.
“The President asked me to deliver his message of sympathy and a contribution of Sh2 million to assist the family,” said Wanga. She further pledged to build a three-bedroom house for Mzee Ojwang’, saying he deserved a dignified home beyond the mourning period.
In addition to the President’s gesture, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also called Mzee Ojwang’ from overseas to extend his condolences and support.
Governor Wanga urged that those
behind Albert’s death be held accountable without delay, insisting that justice must prevail.
“There must be consequences for those involved. We want the matter thoroughly investigated and those responsible prosecuted without favor,” she said.
She added that losing an only child in such a manner was deeply painful and called on authorities to show compassion by ensuring justice is served swiftly.
Mzee Ojwang’ expressed deep appreciation for the support he has received, acknowledging both Ruto and Raila for standing with him during this trying time.
He noted that their outreach gave him strength, and thanked the governor for her continued presence and support throughout his ordeal.
