KENYA: Orange Democratic Movement Lawmakers In Kenya Support Ruto, Defy Party Warning

By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
In Kenya, a section of lawmakers from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has stirred political controversy, by openly supporting President William Ruto, defying strict warnings from their party leadership.
Key figures in the controversy include Makadara MP George Aladwa, who has praised Ruto’s administration for fostering national unity and delivering development projects.
Aladwa remarked: “We must support efforts that unite the country and prioritize the needs of Kenyans.”
However, ODM leaders like Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino have strongly criticised the move.
Sifuna emphasised the need for a strong opposition, stating: “Our role is to hold the government accountable, not to join it.”
Owino echoed similar sentiments, vowing to remain steadfast in upholding ODM’s principles.
ODM leader Raila Odinga has called for an emergency meeting to address the growing dissent.
Party insiders suggest disciplinary measures may be taken against lawmakers seen as undermining party unity.
The lawmakers in question have defended their actions, arguing that their support for Ruto reflects the interests of their constituents.
“We are here to serve the people, not just the party,” one legislator asserted.
This development has sparked mixed reactions across Kenya, with some citizens applauding the bipartisan collaboration, while others view it as a betrayal of ODM’s opposition role.
Analysts warn that such divisions could weaken the opposition’s ability to effectively check government actions.
President Ruto’s administration has welcomed the support, framing it as a step towards fostering national unity.
However, critics argue that it risks eroding democratic accountability.
As the political standoff continues, all eyes remain on ODM’s next move, which will likely shape Kenya’s political landscape in the months to come.
