Nine members of a family tragically lost their lives in an apparent arson incident in Sigomre, located in Siaya County, on Tuesday.
The deceased include a man, Ouma Opando ,his wife, Chester Onyango and their seven children aged 17,15,12,9,7,5 and a six month old infant, all of whom were asleep when their home was set on fire by unidentified assailants.
Sylvester Omondi, who serves as the caretaker of the residence, reported that he became aware of the fire after being awakened by the strong smell of gasoline around midnight.
Upon investigating, he found the main house engulfed in flames and noticed that it had been locked from the outside.
Assistant Chief Robert Odongo received notice of the inferno around 1:00 a.m. and quickly coordinated with local police to reach the scene.
However, by the time they arrived, the house was still burning fiercely.
Initial investigations indicate that the fire was deliberately set, with authorities speculating that the assailants locked the house using a padlock and poured petrol outside .
