KENYA: Nicole Scott Calls For Rethink On Phasing Out Private Children’s Homes
By Moses Punyuah, Nairobi Kenya.
The government is being urged to reconsider its plan to phase out private children’s homes by 2032, amid concerns that thousands of vulnerable children may lack proper support structures.
Nicole Scott, CEO of Baba Nyumbani Children’s Home, said the current national care reform strategy does not provide adequate alternatives for the more than 44,000 children living in private institutions.
“Every day, children in need are brought to us. If these homes are closed, where will they go?” she asked, noting that poverty in many rural communities continues to push more children into vulnerability.
For 21 years, Baba Nyumbani has supported more than 250 children through shelter, education, and reintegration, with 146 alumni now in stable careers, including abroad.
Scott called on the government and community stakeholders to work with established homes instead of shutting them down, urging Kenyans to take greater responsibility in caring for vulnerable children.
