KENYA: National Transport And Safety Authority Introduces Short Message Service Alerts To Combat Overspeed On Kenyan Roads
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
The Kenyan National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has unveiled a new short message Service (SMS) alert system, designed to curb overspeeding among drivers in Kenya.
This innovative measure is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by reckless driving.
Drivers who are reported would receive notifications on their phones starting Wednesday, with messages warning them of overspeeding tendencies.
According to NTSA, the system uses data collected from traffic monitoring systems and aims to provide real-time alerts, reminding motorists to adhere to speed limits.
An NTSA spokesperson emphasized the importance of the initiative, saying: “This new feature is a proactive approach to enhance safety by addressing speeding before it leads to fatal accidents.”
The authority hopes the alerts will encourage behavioral change among drivers, fostering compliance with traffic rules.
The SMS alert system comes amidst a broader push to integrate technology into road safety measures.
Kenya has been grappling with high rates of road traffic accidents, many of which are attributed to overspeeding.
Authorities believe this system could serve as an effective deterrent while educating the public on safe driving habits.
