Kenya National Assembly Speaker, Wetangula Seeks Court Removal From Ksh.1.6B Camera Procurement Case

By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has moved to court, seeking to have his name removed from a legal case challenging the procurement of 25 cameras, allegedly costing Ksh.1.6 billion.
The case, initiated by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), raises concerns about the transparency of the procurement process and potential violations of public finance regulations.
However, Wetangula argues that his inclusion in the case is unwarranted, as LSK has not demonstrated any direct involvement or interest on his part.
In his legal application, the Speaker asserts that being named in the lawsuit is unnecessary and does not affect the substance of the case.
He maintains that excluding him from the proceedings will not disadvantage any of the involved parties.
The case, filed under a certificate of urgency, lists Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen as the primary respondent, while Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Police IG Douglas Kanja, and the Attorney General are also named in the lawsuit.
Wetangula emphasizes that he had no role in the procurement process and that his continued inclusion in the case contradicts the principles of fairness and efficiency in legal proceedings.
He has requested that the matter be addressed before Tuesday to prevent his application from becoming irrelevant.
