Former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, has officially taken the oath of office as Kenya’s new Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture.
The swearing-in ceremony, held on Friday, marks a significant transition in Kagwe’s career and a key development in Kenya’s efforts to strengthen its agricultural sector.
Kagwe, widely acclaimed for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, assumes this critical role at a time when Kenya is grappling with challenges such as food insecurity, climate change, and the need for modern agricultural practices.
His appointment signals a renewed focus on revitalising the sector to bolster economic growth and sustainability.
In his acceptance speech, Kagwe pledged to implement transformative policies and foster innovation to address the pressing issues facing Kenyan farmers and stakeholders.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our nation, and it is our duty to ensure it thrives. Together, we can build a resilient and prosperous agricultural sector for all Kenyans,” Kagwe stated.
Mutahi Kagwe takes over from Dr. Andrew Karanja, who previously held the position of Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development.
As Kagwe assumes office, he is tasked with addressing key priorities, including fertilizer affordability, enhancing irrigation infrastructure, and promoting the adoption of advanced farming technologies.
Stakeholders in the agricultural sector have expressed optimism about Kagwe’s ability to drive impactful reforms, citing his track record of effective leadership.
As one of Kenya’s most vital economic pillars, agriculture remains key to ensuring food security and improving livelihoods nationwide.
Kagwe is expected to work closely with government agencies, farmers, and private-sector partners to deliver on the country’s agricultural goals, setting the stage for a more robust and sustainable agricultural future.
