The Kenya Meteorological Department, has issued a heavy rainfall warning for various parts of the country, beginning Sunday, March 9, 2025.
According to the department’s director, Dr. David Gikungu, the expected rainfall will be above 20mm, with some areas likely to experience over 30mm in 24 hours.
The advisory covers multiple regions, including Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, Nandi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Marsabit, and Uasin Gishu.
Dr. Gikungu warned that the rainfall may intensify and spread to parts of northwestern Kenya by March 10, before gradually reducing in intensity from March 11.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain vigilant against potential hazards such as floods and flash floods that may disrupt transport and daily activities, poor visibility posing risks for motorists and pedestrians, and lightning strikes, with a warning against taking shelter under trees or near metal structures.
“People should avoid sheltering under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes,” the advisory stated.
This warning comes as Kenya enters its long rains season, which typically runs from March to May.
April is expected to experience the heaviest downpours, particularly around the Easter period.
According to Kenya Met, the highest seasonal rainfall, exceeding 300mm is usually recorded in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Highlands, and the Coastal Strip.
The department assured that further updates will be provided if any changes occur in the forecast.
Residents are urged to stay updated through official communication channels and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period.
