KENYA: Kenyan Police Officer Arrested In Raid On Nairobi Shisha Lounge
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
A Kenyan police officer, Constable John Mwangi, was arrested during a multi-agency operation at his establishment, Tropical Breeze Lounge, located in Nairobi.
The raid, conducted by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), and the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), uncovered illegal activities at the facility.
The police, through an official statement shared on the National Police Service’s Twitter account, disclosed that the lounge was under investigation for its involvement in drug peddling and sex trafficking, particularly of underage girls trafficked from neighboring countries.
During the operation, authorities confiscated 20 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, a loaded unlicensed CZ pistol with 15 rounds, marijuana, and shisha bongs suspected to be laced with drugs.
Constable Mwangi, who was found armed at the time of his arrest, is alleged to co-own the facility with his wife, who was not present during the raid.
He is currently detained at Muthaiga Police Station and will be arraigned at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts to face charges.
Police emphasised that cases of drug trafficking and exploitation of minors remain a major concern in such establishments, urging increased vigilance and enforcement to curb these crimes.
