Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Special Forces have killed five suspected Al Shabaab fighters in an operation carried out at Lacta, Mangai, inside the Boni Forest in Lamu County.
The troops, acting on intelligence, uncovered and destroyed a makeshift camp believed to have been used by the militants.
During the raid, soldiers seized AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers with warheads, several rounds of ammunition, tents, solar panels, and materials used for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
According to KDF, several other militants managed to escape but are believed to have sustained injuries.
The latest operation comes months after five officers from the Special Operations Group lost their lives and eight others were injured in an ambush in Lehelo, Lamu, during a mission to pursue terror suspects.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 26, KDF reaffirmed that Operation Amani Boni (OAB) will continue until lasting peace and stability are achieved in the region.
“The fight against terrorism in Boni Forest remains steadfast. We call on residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Together, we will defeat terrorism and restore peace,” read part of the statement.
