By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Kenya Airways has unveiled a new direct flight route between London Gatwick and Nairobi, set to launch on July 2, 2025.
The announcement marks a significant boost for Kenya’s tourism and business sectors, as the route aims to cater to growing demand for travel between the United Kingdom and East Africa.
The new service will operate three times a week, complementing the airline’s existing flights between Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and London Heathrow.
With this addition, Kenya Airways will now offer a total of 10 weekly flights between the two cities.
Kenya Airways has set competitive pricing for the route, with economy-class fares starting at £360 (approximately KSh 66,000) per person.
This move is expected to attract budget conscious travelers while providing a seamless travel experience for business and leisure tourists.
Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, citing increased access for international visitors to Kenya’s renowned attractions, including wildlife safaris in Maasai Mara, Amboseli National Park, and pristine coastal beaches.
“We expect this route to not only bring in more tourists but also strengthen trade relations between Kenya and the United Kingdom ,” said Allan Kilavuka, Chief executive officer of Kenya Airways.
The new route is part of Kenya Airways’ broader strategy to expand its network and solidify Nairobi as a regional aviation hub.
The airline is banking on Nairobi’s strategic location to serve as a gateway for travelers heading to other African destinations.
“This route underscores our commitment to connecting Africa to the world. It offers convenience and flexibility for travelers while enhancing Kenya’s profile as a top travel destination,” Kilavuka added.
Frequent flyers and travel agencies have expressed excitement about the route, highlighting the convenience of flying directly from Gatwick, which is closer to London’s southern suburbs.
Bookings for the new route have already opened, with Kenya Airways offering early-bird discounts for advance reservations.
