KENYA: Kalonzo Urges Azimio MPs To Claim Majority Position In Kenya’s Parliament

By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, has called on members of the Azimio la Umoja coalition to take their rightful place as the majority in Parliament, following a recent High Court ruling.
The ruling, delivered by a three-judge bench on Friday, declared that President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition does not hold the majority status in the House.
Speaking at a rally in Malindi on Sunday, Kalonzo insisted that Azimio legislators should physically occupy the majority side in Parliament when sessions resume, emphasizing that the court’s decision was clear.
“On Tuesday, Azimio leaders in Parliament should take their seats on the majority side because the court has spoken. Azimio is the Majority,” he stated.
Kalonzo also hinted at plans to intensify his political campaign against President Ruto’s administration, asserting that the president’s popularity is dwindling.
He referenced Ruto’s recent visit to Isiolo, where the head of state was met with a hostile crowd, dismissing claims that he had orchestrated the incident.
The court ruling has sparked significant political debate, as it questions the legitimacy of decisions made under Kenya Kwanza’s previously assumed majority.
Additionally, the judges John Chigiti, Lawrence Mugambi, and Jairus Ngaah ruled that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s continued leadership of Ford Kenya is unconstitutional.
They stated that Wetangula should have relinquished his position as the party leader upon taking up the Speaker’s role.
In response, Wetangula downplayed the ruling, asserting that the court’s remarks were mere “legal observations” without binding consequences.
“I assure the nation and the Ford Kenya fraternity that there is no cause for concern. The court’s remarks were just ‘obiter dictum’ non-binding comments with no legal impact,” Wetangula stated.
This ruling could lead to significant shifts in Kenya’s parliamentary leadership, potentially altering the balance of power in the legislature.
