KENYA: Government Prioritises Skills Development To Match Global Labour Demand
By Moses Punyuah, Nairobi
Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff Felix Koskei says the government has placed skills development at the centre of national growth to align Kenya with the evolving global labour market.
Speaking during the Third Nyeri National Polytechnic International Research and Innovation Conference and Skills Expo, Koskei said the country’s future will depend not on the number of academic degrees produced, but on the quality of skills, innovation and technical competence.
“The future of our economy will not be determined by how many degrees we produce, but by how many skilled hands, innovative minds and competent professionals we prepare for industry and enterprise,” he said.
Koskei cited global projections showing a shortage of more than 85 million skilled workers by 2030, saying Kenya must urgently position itself to fill part of that gap.
He said the government has rolled out major reforms in the TVET sector, including the dual training model, recognition of prior learning, digital skills mapping, and heavy investment in modern equipment and infrastructure.
“These are structural shifts designed to position Kenya as a serious player in the global skills economy,” he said, adding that TVET institutions must focus on practical training and innovation to deliver job-read
y graduates.
