In the lead-up to June 25, Kenyans, particularly the youth identified as Gen Z, are gearing up for nationwide demonstrations to remember those who tragically lost their lives during last year’s protests against the controversial Finance Bill. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has made a passionate plea to the citizens to ensure that these protests remain peaceful and respect the rule of law.
In a video message shared today ,Sakaja highlighted the importance of maintaining order and integrity during the demonstrations, urging participants to steer clear of violence and criminal activities. “I have communicated with the police leadership to guarantee that peaceful protesters will receive protection while standing up for their rights,” he stated. The governor emphasized that any form of chaos or unrest undermines democracy and should not be tolerated.
The protests commemorate the tragic events of June 25, 2024, when demonstrations against the Finance Bill escalated into violence, leading to numerous casualties among young people who were demonstrating peacefully. This year’s protests aim to honor the victims of police brutality that occurred during those tumultuous days, with leaders from civil society, youth activists, and opposition parties advocating for non-violent assemblies.
While officials are committed to ensuring security for demonstrators, concerns persist regarding the potential infiltration of criminal elements intending to disrupt the peaceful protests. Sakaja reassured the public that the authorities would act firmly against anyone attempting to instigate violence.
As the date approaches, the call for peaceful demonstrations echoes throughout the country, with leaders urging all participants to uphold the democratic principles of respect and non-violence, and to ensure that the collective memory of the victims is honored appropriately.
