KENYA: Content Creators Launch ‘One Lege Challenge’ After Ruto’s Leg Shooting Remarks
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Kenyan content creators have sparked a viral online trend dubbed the “One Lege Challenge”, in reaction to President William Ruto’s recent controversial statement that those who interfere with other people’s businesses should be “shot in the leg.”
The challenge exploded on social media after a dramatic video by popular Facebook creator Dem wa Facebook surfaced. In the clip, she is seen selling crutches to a man while warning him, “Ukikataa leo, utaitumia kesho!” — meaning, “If you refuse today, you’ll need it tomorrow.”
The satirical scene struck a nerve, with Kenyans online quickly adopting the hashtag #OneLegeChallenge to mimic, mock, and criticize the president’s remarks.
What began as a humorous skit has now morphed into a trending protest using comedy and sarcasm to confront rising political tension.
President Ruto’s comments came during a recent rally as nationwide protests over high living costs and alleged government corruption continued to spread.
His statement has drawn heavy criticism from civil society, opposition leaders, and rights groups who say such language undermines democracy and could encourage violence.
Now, through short videos, skits, and memes, content creators are flipping the narrative. Some appear dressed as doctors handing out crutches, while others role-play dramatic scenes of people begging not to be “legged.”
While the tone remains light-hearted, the message behind the movement is serious: Kenyans especially the youth are resisting what they see as threats to their freedom of expression and civil liberties.
The One Lege Challenge has not only captured the imagination of netizens but has also reignited conversations about accountability, leadership, and the power of satire in Kenyan political discourse.
