KENYA: Christ Is The Answer Ministries Denies Allegations Of Turning Away Refuge-seeking Protesters

Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) Valley Road Church in Kenya has rejected accusations that it refused shelter to demonstrators during the protests that occurred on June 25. The church stated that no individuals arrived seeking refuge.
In a media briefing held on Thursday, Senior Pastor Reverend Jesse Mwai addressed claims circulating on social media that the church did not provide assistance to individuals during the demonstrations, which were held to commemorate victims of last year’s anti-Finance Bill protests.
Pastor Mwai explained that, while they were prepared to help, the church, located in a high-security area, did not have anyone come forward for assistance.
He mentioned that the church’s caretaker was present at the entrance until late in the evening, waiting for anyone needing help.
“Our deputy bishop received a call from individuals seeking support, and he directed our caretaker, who remained on-site, to grant access to anyone who required shelter,” Reverend Mwai noted.
He further highlighted the challenges posed by police barricades near the church, which significantly hindered access for protesters.
“Our caretaker stayed at the gate until 1:30 a.m. waiting for anyone who might need assistance, but sadly, no one arrived. After that, he went to rest.”
The pastor indicated that the church had reviewed surveillance footage and spoken with staff on-site, confirming no protesters were denied entry.
“This morning, following the numerous accusations we faced, I personally led interviews, and our team reviewed CCTV footage; there was no instance of anyone arriving at Valley Road yesterday, either day or night, and being turned away,” he stated. He encouraged anyone who claims to have been denied help to come forward.
Rev. Mwai reaffirmed the church’s commitment to the marginalized and dismissed any notions of bias.
“As CITAM, we are steadfast in our policy of supporting the vulnerable and those in need, ensuring our doors remain open to everyone, regardless of membership,” he added.
Deputy Bishop Rev. Justus Mugambi supported this position, noting that security assessments and CCTV evidence revealed no attempts by individuals to seek refuge at that time.
The church clarified that it had acted on calls for assistance and directed individuals to CITAM Valley Road, but none showed up.
“We were prepared to assist, remaining available until 1:30 a.m., yet no one arrived seeking support,” the statement conveyed.
CITAM reiterated its historical commitment to humanitarian aid, referencing its responses to national emergencies, and emphasized its role in supporting those in need while continuously standing in solidarity with the people of Kenya.
“We have a proven track record in disaster response… It is our fundamental duty and practice to support society’s vulnerable and needy,” CITAM stated.
“We stand with all Kenyans in pursuit of truth, justice, and unity as we strive for a more equitable and peaceful community.”
