Kenya Celebrates Historic Election Of Judge Phoebe Okowa To The ICJ

Kenya has marked a historic milestone with the election of Judge Phoebe Okowa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), becoming the first Kenyan to serve on the court since its establishment in 1945.
Judge Okowa’s election, which fills a mid-term vacancy, underscores the confidence of United Nations Member States in her exceptional credentials, vast experience, and unwavering integrity.
President William Ruto met and congratulated Judge Okowa at State House, Nairobi, describing her achievement as “a proud moment for Kenya and a testament to the talent, professionalism, and global impact of our citizens.”
“The election of Judge Phoebe Okowa to the ICJ reflects not just her personal excellence, but also Kenya’s commitment to contributing distinguished professionals to the international community,” the President added.
Judge Okowa now assumes this prestigious international role, with the full support of the Government of Kenya, as she represents the country on the world stage and continues to enhance Kenya’s reputation in the multilater
al system.
