KENYA: Catholic Archdiocese Of Nairobi Rejects Donations From Kenyan President Ruto and Nairobi Governor Sakaja

The Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi has announced its decision to reject donations from President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, citing a need to uphold the integrity and independence of the Church.
In a statement released yesterday evening , the Archdiocese clarified that the move was not a personal attack on the leaders but rather a reflection of its commitment to avoid any perception of partisanship or undue influence.
“The Church must remain a sanctuary for all people, regardless of their political affiliations. Accepting such donations could potentially undermine our moral authority and credibility,” the statement read.
The Archdiocese expressed concern over the increasing politicisation of religious spaces, emphasising that the Church should not be used as a platform for political endorsements or influence.
This decision follows a recent public debate about the role of churches in Kenyan politics, particularly the ethical implications of receiving donations from political leaders. Critics have often questioned the sources of these funds and their potential to sway religious institutions into political bias.
Governor Sakaja, in response to the decision, expressed disappointment but maintained respect for the Church’s position. “I have always supported the Church in its mission and will continue to do so in other ways,” he said during a public address.
President Ruto, a devout Christian and frequent churchgoer, has yet to issue a formal response. His administration has previously been vocal about its commitment to partnering with religious institutions to address societal challenges.
The Archdiocese’s stand has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Supporters of the move commend the Church for prioritising transparency and ethical principles. However, critics argue that such decisions could alienate leaders who genuinely wish to contribute to the Church’s welfare initiatives.
As the debate unfolds, the Archdiocese reaffirmed its commitment to working with all stakeholders, provided that their contributions align with the Church’s values and mission.
This development highlights the delicate balance religious institutions must maintain in navigating Kenya’s complex socio-political landscape.
