KENYA: Activist Morara Kebaso Abruptly Exits Politics Weeks After Launching His Party Agenda
By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
Activists turned politician Morara Kebaso, has announced his sudden exit from the political arena, only weeks after unveiling his party’s official policy blueprint.
Kebaso made the announcement on Monday, via a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), hinting that unrelenting public scrutiny and harsh online criticism influenced his decision to step away from his new political journey.
“I’ve left politics. I now want to enjoy life, run my business freely, travel, meet friends, and relax without fear of cameras. I finally feel free,” he wrote.
The Inject Party leader also lamented that he was frequently misrepresented by the media and constantly had to worry about his personal security because of his political involvement.
He added that being in the public eye meant he was judged even for how he smiled or danced, and now he could live more privately without needing security escorts or media appearances.
Kebaso first gained attention during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations in mid-2024, during which he led a public accountability campaign that saw him travel across the country, highlighting abandoned government projects some dating back to the Uhuru Kenyatta administration.
His campaign received overwhelming public support and even drew a response from State House, with spokesperson Hussein Mohammed explaining that some of the stalled projects had either been cancelled or were undergoing re-tendering.
Seen by many as a fresh voice representing Kenya’s Gen-Z, Morara’s popularity, however, began to fade as questions emerged about his tax records and constant appeals for financial help from his online followers.
His credibility was further questioned in March 2025 when he announced that his political outfit, Injection of National Justice, Economic and Civic Transformation (INJECT), had joined forces with the opposition.
In April, a photograph of him meeting individuals aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua went viral, fuelling allegations that he might have been aligned with state interests all along.
His decision to step down now puts an end to a short but eventful political stint, marked by both public admiration and deep controversy.
