KENYA: 50 Isiolo Youths Freed After Interrupting Kenyan President During His Speech

50 youths who were arrested in Isiolo after interrupting President William Ruto in a speech during his visit, have been released today.

The arrests, carried out on Friday and Saturday, led to widespread concern among residents, activists, and legal professionals.

Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Maureen Odhiambo on Monday, the youths pleaded guilty to charges of being drunk and disorderly.

The packed courtroom included their families, lawyers, and human rights defenders. The magistrate ruled that the charges were minor and discharged them with a warning, advising them not to repeat the offense.

The security operation was reportedly triggered by the President’s reaction to the heckling.

Some locals believe it was an overreaction. Hadija Abdi, a resident, recounted how her family members were arrested while trying to get a motorcycle ride home.

She suggested that dialogue with local leaders would have been a better solution. Diana Gatwiri, a paralegal, criticized the arrests, saying they happened without prior warning and left many confused about why they were detained.

Isiolo elders condemned the heckling, attributing it to political rivalry. Elder Omar Godana apologized on behalf of the community, urging authorities to forgive the youths.

Meanwhile, in a related case, Shuaib Yusuf was charged with obstructing the presidential motorcade after stopping his tuk-tuk along the Isiolo-Archers Post road. He was released on a Ksh 5,000 bail.

The operation and its aftermath have sparked debate on the handling of such incidents, with calls for a more measured security response in the future.
