An Israeli airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip, has claimed the lives of 11 people, including Mahmud Salah, the former police chief of Hamas’s now-defunct police force, and his deputy Hussam Shahwan.
The attack, which struck a tent housing displaced families in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Yunis, also left 15 others injured, according to a statement from Gaza’s civil defense agency on Thursday.
The agency revealed that among the deceased were three children and two women.
The agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal condemned the strike, calling it a “deliberate attack on civilians seeking refuge from conflict.”
The Israeli military, in response to inquiries, stated it was investigating the incident.
This airstrike follows a warning from Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who pledged to intensify military actions if Hamas continued its rocket attacks.
While recent rocket fire from Gaza has caused minimal physical damage in Israel, it poses a political challenge for the Israeli government, now 15 months into a prolonged conflict.
Katz also reiterated Israel’s demand for the release of hostages still held in Gaza, further complicating efforts to de-escalate tensions.
