The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and BudgIT Foundation have formalised their partnership to promote transparency and accountability in the execution of publicly funded projects.
In a press statement issued on Saturday by the ICPC Spokesperson, Demola Bakare, the Commission announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BudgIT Foundation.
The ceremony took place at the ICPC Headquarters on Friday during a visit by the BudgIT delegation led by its Country Representative, Gabriel Okeowo.
ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, commended the agreement, describing it as a reflection of the shared commitment between the two organisations to ensure Nigeria’s limited resources are utilised effectively.
He highlighted the Commission’s achievements under the Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Group (CEPTG), which has monitored over 5,000 projects since 2019 and compelled contractors to return to incomplete projects valued at ₦74 billion.
Dr. Aliyu reaffirmed the ICPC’s resolve to hold project defaulters accountable and called on citizens to participate actively by monitoring constituency projects and reporting irregularities.
“The MoU will stabilise our core working relationship with BudgIT to ensure that we help Nigerians,” he said. “I call on Nigerians to follow the work of CEPTG, get a copy of the Nigerian budget, and track their constituency projects to hold the government accountable.”
He assured that the ICPC and other relevant authorities would address any complaints brought forward by Nigerians regarding constituency projects.
Speaking at the event, BudgIT’s Country Representative, Gabriel Okeowo, noted that the partnership reflects the mutual dedication of both organisations to combat corruption in public project execution.
He acknowledged the ICPC’s ongoing efforts in project tracking across the country and emphasised the role of BudgIT’s investigative arm, TRACKA, in providing intelligence and data to support the initiative.
“The MoU demonstrates our joint commitment to transparency. Some clauses within the agreement were already being implemented even before its official signing,” Okeowo stated.
The collaboration is expected to enhance oversight and accountability in the use of public funds, further strengthening the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
