Hon. Alex Ikwechegh Apologises For Assault On Uber Driver, Vows Commitment To Change

Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, a Member of the House of Representatives, has issued a formal apology following a viral video showing him engaging in what he described as “unacceptable behaviour” toward an Uber driver who came to his residence to deliver a package.
In a statement he released on Tuesday, Ikwechegh expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging that his conduct was unbecoming of a public official and fell short of the standards expected by his constituents and the Nigerian public.
“I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official,” Ikwechegh said.
He apologised to the Uber driver involved, as well as to his constituents and the nation at large, noting that the incident had caused embarrassment and harm.
The lawmaker assured the public of his full cooperation with the Nigerian Police’s ongoing investigation, expressing his support for their efforts to ensure accountability.
Ikwechegh commended the swift response from both his party and the Nigerian Police, highlighting their collective commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of citizens.
As part of his commitment to personal growth, Ikwechegh announced he would seek professional counselling to address underlying issues that contributed to the incident.
He also plans to engage in community service initiatives promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.
The lawmaker further urged Nigerians to join in fostering a culture of respect and tolerance, stating, “We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.”
Ikwechegh concluded by thanking the public for their understanding as he embarked on what he described as “a journey towards healing and growth.”
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has issued an official statement regarding the allegations of the incident, which has sparked widespread public concern and media attention.
In the statement signed by House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the 10th Assembly emphasised its commitment to ethical standards and accountability, stating that any behaviour falling short of these values would be treated with utmost seriousness.
“As elected officials, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethical conduct and accountability in our official engagements and private lives,” the statement read.
The House confirmed that the matter is currently under investigation by the Nigerian Police, urging the public to allow due process to proceed without interference.
