Former Malawian Presidents Demand Justice For Violence Against Opposition Supporters In Lilongwe”
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Former Malawian presidents Bakili Muluzi (United Democratic Front, UDF), Joyce Banda (People’s Party, PP), and Peter Mutharika (Democratic Progressive Party, DPP) have condemned the violence against opposition supporters in Lilongwe’s Area 47.
They urge authorities to bring perpetrators to justice, emphasising Malawians’ right to peaceful assembly and free choice of leaders.
The former leaders criticise President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for failing to prevent violence.
They also condemn the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for hiring Smartmatic, potentially disenfranchising voters through faulty voter registration by the National Registration Bureau (NRB).
“This is the time to act. Our democratic governance is at stake,” they said.
President Chakwera has not commented, while MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila denied involvement, challenging opponents to provide evidence.
The protests are primarily against the MEC’s decision to hire Smartmatic for the 2025 General Elections, citing concerns about the company’s past performance in other countries.
