Former Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika has mourned the death of former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, describing him as “a brother and a man of great dignity.”
Writing on his Facebook page, Mutharika said Lungu was a humble and committed leader who worked tirelessly for the people of Zambia. He recalled their close collaboration during their time in office, praising Lungu’s wisdom and dedication to public service.
“He led with a calm spirit and unwavering commitment to his nation,” Mutharika wrote. “His leadership style was grounded in humility and compassion, qualities that earned him respect both at home and across the continent.”
Mutharika also reflected on the shared aspirations between Malawi and Zambia under their respective leaderships, noting that both countries prioritized regional integration, peace, and development. He emphasized Lungu’s pivotal role in advancing the goals of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), where he was known for promoting unity and cooperation.
Beyond politics, Mutharika spoke of their personal friendship, built on mutual respect and a shared vision for Africa’s progress. He said Lungu’s passing is not only a loss to Zambia but to the wider African family.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to Lungu’s family, President Hakainde Hichilema, and the people of Zambia, saying Lungu’s legacy would continue to inspire generations across Africa.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace. Africa has lost a true son,” Mutharika concluded.
